I recently retained a marketing consultant who had a question for me? That was, 'Why are you still doing this?' It's true I could stop working and 'retire', just. I did not have an immediate answer for him but after some reflection on my part here is what that answer was and is:
'I am still working in the construction industry because I enjoy the process, the results and the people I get to meet. But most of all I really get a sense of satisfaction from delivering a well done project to it's ultimate owner. Doing this is far from easy but the rewards I get, emotional and financial, from doing this return all the effort it takes on my, and my team's part, many fold.'
I'm committed to using what I know to make life better for those around me. The company motto means just what it says. Simple as that.
Let me take this opportunity to introduce my company, Universe Construction, to you.(Call us at 510-524-1456 now for a free consultation) We are located in the East Bay working there and in San Francisco and Marin county. A little about me, I qualified for my contractor's license in 1977 after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972 where I had majored in Physics. I spent the next eleven years working in the construction industry as a carpenter, foreman and ultimately as project manager.
During the period of 1988 through 1994 I was associated with an Emeryville developer and a local architect doing design/build projects. A high point of this period was when one of our projects received an Award of Merit from the East Bay Chapter of the A.I.A.
Since 1994 I have been focused on developing relationships with local architects and interior designers with the aim of working on residential construction, on both new and remodeling projects.

The bathroom pictured to the left was included in a recent Sunset book on western bathrooms. It's located in Berkeley and was part of a three bath project completed two years ago. This project was designed by Tracey Kessler of tkid who before she left for the 'big show' in NYC was featured in several San Francisco Designer Showcases.
You can see here that we know our way around the precise work needed to install an Interior Designer's work. The bronze vessel sink was placed by having the Owner actually stand in front of same and moving it and the Kohler mixer so that everything was placed for her use in the most ergonometrically correct fashion for her.

The picture to the right is of the Partners Office at Royal Coffee in Emeryville a rare example of our work in the commercial area. We concentrate mostly on high-end residential renovations. This project had the first prefinished bamboo floor on the West Coast and also featured an early example of concrete countertop which has since become quite the way to go despite its high cost.

I have now spent thirty-five years in the construction industry and rely on the experience I have gained during that time to bring my company's resources to bear on every project we work on. My aim is to work with both your Designer and/or Architect and you in an organized fashion to satisfy all parties, myself included. I have very high standards as to the quality of my work and the process I use to do same. I am always ready to communicate with everyone concerned with the project and always remaining committed, from the project's start to finish, to satisfying you, the customer. My emphasis is on quality and craftsmanship not cost; although I find that my company's pricing is comparable to our peers in the industry. I know first hand that construction is very expensive and should the initial estimate be more than you have budgeted I can often make suggestions to reduce the project cost while retaining the project's aesthetics.
My company always works with an established set of subcontractors and suppliers. These are people whom we have learned we can rely on to get the work done properly and in a timely manner and is the essence of the LEAN methodology we use before, during and after the construction process. By working with the same folks again and again we have developed an efficient operation. We have found that this approach will result in a high quality project for you; completed in a timely manner which is good for all parties concerned. We and they are now working to improve our team's understanding of the LEAN method of construction management to bring you the client increased value in your Project.
